695HOOPS WHERE IT'S ALWAYS ALL ABOUT THE GIRLS
If you've been to a girls game in the area in the last ten years you've probably bumped into Coach Stretch. The man calls the gym his sanctuary and he's coached at the high school, college and AAU levels. We had a sit down with Stretch and we chopped it up about a few things.
695: Tell me about your playing career...
Coach: I played at Dunbar High School and then I went to Norfolk State for two years. After that I was off to the military where I was a medic for 10 years. Dunbar was number one in the country when I was there. I played with Tree Harried and Truck Lewis. Class of 84.
695: Where did you grow up?
Coach: East Baltimore.
695: Tell me about your coaching career...
Coach: I started at Lake Clifton with my lady friend at the time (Regina Nolan). I did 3 years at Northern high school then 3 years at Western before going to Morgan State. With AAU I started with the Baltimore Cougars and with that team I brought home 3 state championships. Then I went over to the Baltimore starz for 4 years then to the Lady Shooting Stars for 1 year. And oh yea, I was at IND for one year too and now I'm at MATHS.
695: How did you end up at MATHS?
Coach: Coach CJ Scott (Baltimore Starz) asked me to make the journey with him to MATHS. I couldn't say no because he's a good guy with a core of great girls.
695: Tell me about this year's team...
Coach: We have a fundamentally sound team thats looking forward to big challenges. Now with the addition of Shala "Quiet Storm" Shula it takes us up a notch.
695: What do you think of the overall direction of girls ball in the area?
Coach: I think it's up and down sometimes in this area. I think the 2010 class was really strong.
695: Who had the biggest influence on your coaching style and philosophy?
Coach: I would say Donchez Graham and Dawn Staley.
695: What do you do to stay sharp and improve as a coach?
Coach: I am always willing to learn and listen to other coaches and even players, because they have a different view on the court as well.
695: What else do you do besides coach?
Coach: I work at an elementary school and spend time with my own brats.
695: What's the last good concert you went to?
Coach: I went to a Jazz concert on my birthday with my lady friend.
695: Thanks for your time.
Coach: Thanks for the interview.
