695HOOPS WHERE IT'S ALWAYS ALL ABOUT THE GIRLS
Saturday, March 4th.
We made our way to Richmond, Virginia to the Ben Wallace Gym for the Under Armour Southeast Future Stars showcase and came away very impressed. The event was organized and run by Torrance and Seatra Archie of Cross Over Hoops and their basketball family of players and coaches.
I could tell immediately that this was going to be a quality event. We walked in during the warm up drills and Coach Torrance was right in the middle of the floor pushin and imploring the participants to go harder. This was not a showcase to where you could slack off and go through the motions. I was very impressed with the instruction and attention to detail Coach Archie and the older Cross Over players paid to the participants. I thought the drills were challenging and they were transferable to things players need to do in a basketball game. After warm ups and several drill stations the players broke off into their teams.
Around this time is when Ben Wallace's brother rolled up on me and told me I was about to taste the best fish I've ever had. The brother looks like he knows his way around a kitchen so I made a mental note to check for him later in the day.
There were 40 players in the event and several already look like they will be first day contributors to their high school programs. I was also very impressed with some of the 5th grade talent. They fearlessly jumped in and competed with the older girls. The games were intense and well played for the most part, and they were followed by a brief awards ceremony. Media outlets including Next Sports Phenom, Assist Student Athletes and 695Hoops.com voted for the awards.
As for the fish, it was definitely in the top 3 of all time concessions offerings so if you're at the Ben Wallace Gym in the future check them out.
Sanya Gray, MD Lady Tigers, 2021
Ms. Gray took the Most Outstanding Player award with her back to Maryland after scoring buckets all day. It didn't matter who was guarding her, she scored from long range and on slashes to the hoop. She is a very explosive and athletic player with a high IQ.
Lauren McCall, Cross Over Hoops, 2021
Lauren had an excellent outing. She has excellent size and a versatile game. She is a very efficient finisher and sets up teammates for easy baskets. She earned an invitiation to the Girls Middle School All Star Game off her performance. She took home the Best All Around Player award.
Prophet Sheffield, Foundation Academy, 2022
I enjoyed watching Prophet play. She is an energetic guard with plenty of flair, but there is substance as well. She is strong in transition and gets to the basket at will. She has several slick hesitation moves that kept defenders off balance. Looking forward to seeing her again.
Kimaya Williams, Hoop Nation, 2022
Kimaya had a solid day. She was exceptional on defense and scored in a variety of ways. She was a difference maker and took home an award for her hard work. She also earned and accepted an invitation to the Girls Middle School All Star Game.
Mackenzie Thomas, Southern MD Spartans, 5th grade.
I really enjoyed watching her compete. She never backed down from the challenge of player older, bigger kids. She had her moments.
Nadela Regala, Southern MD Spartans, 5th grade.
Very fundamentally sound player for her age and she's a good shooter. Lots of potential.
Asia Hicks, Foundation Academy, 6th grader.
Asia is a tough and dynamic player. She is a fierce competitor and went hard all day.
