GARRISON FOREST RUNS AWAY FROM MT. CARMEL FOR IAAM C TITLE, 36 TO 18
The IAAM championships were decided on Sunday, February 15th at Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Maryland. The day started with the C conference championship match up between Garrison Forest and Mount Carmel. Garrison Forest came into the game sporting an 18-1 overall record and a perfect 16-0 in conference play. Mt. Carmel came in at 16-6 overall, with an 11-5 conference record.
Garrison moved out to an early 7-0 lead after the first quarter thanks to some nice inside work by sophomore Marina Lazarides who rebounded well and made some free throws. Their zone frustrated Mt. Carmel, limiting them to contested shots. Mt. Carmel finally got on the scoreboard in the second quarter thanks to sophomore Tae Edmondson who scored all 5 of their points in the quarter. The Grizzlies increased the lead to 17-5 at the half thanks to 7 second quarter points by junior guard Maria Molina.
Garrison Forest shot the ball extremely well from the outside in the third quarter and pulled away for a comfortable 31 to 10 lead after three. This game was a wrap at this point, probably way before that. The turning point to me was in the second quarter when I tweeted this:
Garrison up 15 to 2. Mt. Carmel big missed a lay up, pouted and walked up court. Garrison big ran the court and scored an and 1.
That was an experienced senior player closing her career out with a chance for a championship and she did not give full effort, while the girl she was matched up with ran down the court and scored. I do not normally point out negative behavior, but as the day unfolded this sequence kept coming back to me. There were players in the crowd who would have given everything to be on that court in that spotlight. A 12-2 deficit in the second quarter is not a reason to give up.Garrison went on to win 36 to 18. Marina Lazarides scored 13 points, with 11 of those coming on free throws. She worked hard, hustled and never gave up on a play. Maria Molina added 11 points for Garrison Forest. Tae Edmonson scored 15 of the 18 Mt. Carmel points and gave it everything she had all game. Mt. Carmel is rebuilding their program after not having girls basketball for a couple of seasons so it was a great start for their school to reach the finals.
