695HOOPS WHERE IT'S ALWAYS ALL ABOUT THE GIRLS
The first ever Under Armour East Coast Challenge went down in Baltimore on the weekend of June 4 and 5th. The event featured programs from Under Armour's Premier Team Network's fledgling Northeast division and any other teams that wanted some competition. The event featured competition in every age group from 5th through 11th grades and a special Baby Ballers division that took place in Washington, DC.
The first weekend of June is the most popular weekend for high school and college graduations so there was a built in challenge from the start. Under Armour's Power Move Basketball, which hosted the event, was unable to secure any of the few multi court facilities in the area due to conflicts with graduation so they lined up five separate sites. One of those sites, The Seed School, received notice on Wednesday afternoon that President Obama would be on their campus on June 4th so the East Coast Challenge was asked to go elsewhere. The Maryland Lady Tigers, another Under Armour program from the area, stepped in and secured New Town High school to alleviate that problem. Two of the five sites were pretty hot inside and there were some scheduling snafus based on last minute changes that were made to accommodate the last minute change. The New Town site had some issues with the rules as parts of some games were as running clock instead of the stopped clock that was advertised.
Outside of the teams wearing their Under Armour uniforms and apparel, you really could not tell that Under Armour was involved. There was no signage at any of the locations besides the location in DC so there was nothing to separate the event from any other weekend tournament from a visual standpoint
It seems like poor adult behavior is now the norm at youth sports events so we had the obligatory verbal abuse of the referees at just about every site and one game that ended with a physical altercation between two players.
A little over a year ago teams in this West Baltimore area had to cancel practices because of civil unrest and riots at Mondawmin Mall by teenagers upset about the Freddie Gray situation. It was nice to see the players and their families at this same mall between games supporting the local eateries and the community in general. Baltimore is not all the way back yet, but we will continue to do our part.
There was some really good basketball played and a lot of talented players in the tournament. The Baby Ballers division was hosted by Team Sol and although there were only 8 teams the games were spirited and competive for players in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. It looks like PTN's Northeast division could be really good with programs like Cross Over Hoops, Power Move, Philly Freedom Stars, Maryland Lady Tigers, NDO Hornets and others holding it down. With Under Armour teams winning five of the eight championships I would say they protected the house. Here is a look at the championship teams.
