695: Where did you grow up?
Coach: Baltimore, West Side.
695 Did you play sports growing up?
Coach: Yes, I played football and basketball Edmondson High School.
695: How did you start coaching?
Coach: My daughter wanted to play at 6 and the league needed coaches. I was then bitten by the coaching bug.
695: Where have you coached?
Coach: The only place I have coached is for the Maryland Tigers.
695: What is your role with Baltimore County Recs/Parks?
Coach: I am the President of the Owings Mills Recreation Council. I have been a member of the council since 2001 and a President for 5 years.
695: Tell me about the MD Lady Tigers program...
Coach: The Lady Tigers program was started in 2002. I started the program to give a chance for any of our young ladies in the area to learn the game of basketball. Our recreation program had a number of female players that wanted to continue to learn how to play and we wanted to make sure they could learn in their own community without having to travel a distance. We also think that every player should have a chance to get the best education possible. My key leaders that help me run this program are Walter Roman and Marvin Anderson. We also have a lot of others that volunteer their time to keep the program running.
695: What do you think about the overall direction of girls basketball in this area?
Coach: I think girls basketball in this area has improved in the level of the girls being more athletic and being trained better. It seems like there are trainers all over, which means that the parents really have to choose wisely if they choose to go that route. We do need to place more of an emphasis on fundamentals.
695: Tell me about your new role with Maryland AAU...
Coach: I will be a Co-Chair person with Carolyn Leach for the Maryland AAU district. I will help to change some of the format to make the tournament better. We want to bring new programs into the tournament and make changes to keep them there. We want to make sure that we have competitive basketball on all levels of AAU in this area and it will take all of us to make it work. I will be visiting with all program directors to see what are some of their ideas to make us the best AAU district.
695: Participation in AAU has dropped in this area. What are you going to do to bring it back up?
Coach: I think we need to get all of the program directors involved in the process. Different programs need to get a chance to host. I think there are many teams that are D2 or even D3 teams that we don't ever get into the district qualifier.
695: What challenges do you face with the Lady Tigers program?
Coach: The biggest challenge is not having enough experienced coaching. We are growing so fast that we have to slow the process down because we need more coaches.
695: What else do you do besides youth sports and coaching?
Coach: I work in Property Management and I love being a DJ. I have been a DJ since I was 12.
