GMSS BALTIMORE RECAP (SETON KEOUGH)
On Friday, September 12th the DMV girls basketball crowd gathered at Seton Keough high school in Baltimore for the Girls Middle School Showcase.
Over 50 players from the classes of 2019 and 2020 participated in the third annual showcase. The gym was packed with high school coaches from schools like IAAM B conference contenders Mount De Sales, to independent powerhouses like Riverdale Baptist. Public and private schools from as far as Hagerstown came to watch players who came from as far as central Pennsylvania. Championship coaches like Milford Mill's Detoiya Mcaliley and Brad Rees of McDonogh were in attendance looking for players who could help them continue their success.
Coach Morris "Stretch" Brandon ran the participants through some stretching excercises and basketball drills for about 30 minutes to get them warmed up and ready for action. The two 7th grade teams were up first with the black and gold team being coached by Mike Horton and Tiffany McMillion, and the Green team being coached by Carol Durkee and Gavin Henry. The gym was crowded and hot and the girls went at each other hard in the opener. This was an entertaining game with both teams having nice scoring runs. It went down to the wire with the Black team prevailing 45 to 43.
The 8th grade game (2019) followed immediately after and was just as entertaining. There were some high level prospects in this game but the Black team's late flurry sealed the 54 to 47 win.Not all players can shine in showcase events like this, but that does not diminish them as good players. Some of the comments are limited because we are still in the process of evaluating. Let's take a look at some of the players from the GMSS Baltimore Showcase of 2014...
Brianna Forbes, 5'7" Governor Thomas Johnson Middle School (2019)
Brianna is a physical, athletic scoring guard. She displayed great leadership skills both vocally and in her confident play. Her teammates fed off her swagger and looked to get her the ball. She has the potential to play multiple positions based on the skill set we saw. Look for her to have a break out spring and summer in 2015.
Marissa Sanchez-Henry, 5'1", Ellicott Mills Middle School (2020)
At every Girls Middle School Showcase a player that we did not know about emerges and makes a name for herself. Marissa is a true point guard who looks to set up her teammates and run the offense. She showed the ability to penetrate and finish, or dish to an open teammate. The most impressive part of her game is her knack for creating space to get off shots. Her handle is tight and she can shoot off the dribble. She showed a nice mid range pull up and shot a nice percentage for the night. Looking forward to seeing more of her.
Lainey Keys, 5'8", Magothy River Middle School, (2020)
This is a tough guard with a nose for the ball. I love the way she attacks on defense. She never took a step back and showed the ability to keep her player in front of her. She also has nice form on her shot.
Reniyah Ross, 5'8", Annapolis Area Christian School (2019)
Exceptional athlete who is a good scorer and displayed a good basketball IQ. She made some nice moves to set up her teammates.
Trinity Horton, 5'7", Golden Ring Middle School (2019)
Trinity caught my eye at last year's Baltimore showcase. She is developing steadily. She has a nice jumper and scores inside as well.Strong open court player.
Ramazjah Ramsey, 5'3" Aberdeen Middle School (2019)
This is a tough little guard. She has a good handle and her shot form is solid. She attacks on defense like her life depends on protecting the basket. She drives to the hoop without fear, and gets up after hitting the floor, which happens a lot. Opposing guards should be ready to rumble the entire game.
Adrianne "AJ" Davis, 6'1", Old Mill South, (2019)
Adrianne is a very athletic post. She looked much leaner and more explosive than she did in last year's showcase. She is developing into a nice prospect that should have an immediate impact in high school.
Savawn Hughes, 5'7", Windsor Mill Middle School
Savawn returned to the GMSS Baltimore showcase to show us how much her game has improved. She is an aggressive and strong player with a scorer's mentality. She showed nice range on her shot but really excelled in the paint.
Kaniyah Harris, 5'7" guard, Walker Mill Middle, 2020
Ms. Harris is a strong guard who can post up and score inside with a variety of moves. She finishes through contact and makes her foul shots. She beats defenders off the dribble and rebounds well offensively. High school coaches are waiting on her.
Eniya Russell, 5'4'' combo guard, Maths, 2020
Ms. Russell is a flashy player but there is also some substance in her game. She can effectively play both guard spots because she can score and set up teammates as well. She is a good 3 point shooter and she has a nasty crossover.
D'erra Townes, 5'8" guard, White Oak Middle 2019
Ms. Townes is new to the area. I cannot think of a better way to get acclimated to the area than to jump into the GMSS fray. She served immediate notice that she will be a force. She is fast, physical and explosive. She plays with a quiet confidence and looks like she will be able to play multiple postions in high school.
