695HOOPS WHERE IT'S ALWAYS ALL ABOUT THE GIRLS
Florida State has landed Riverdale Baptist guard Chania Ray and they have big plans for her. The 2014 baller re-opened her recruting after committing to James Madison too early. After a stellar performance at the Deep South Classic Ms. Ray answered a few questions for 695Hoops.
695: How did you start playing ball and how old were you?
Chania: I started playing rec league ball when I was about 7. My mom was coaching and I wanted to try it. Started playing AAU ball around 9 years old.
695: Have you played any other sports?
Chania: Yes, I have played almost every sport you can name. I played tackle football, softball, ran track, volleyball, competitive dancing, gymnastics, soccer. I’m probably missing one or two.
695: Where did you grow up?
Chania: Right here in the DMV. I have lived in Alexandria, VA since I was born.
695: What other hobbies do you have besides sports?
Chania: I enjoy shopping and drawing.
695: What do you want to add to your game for the next level?
695: What made you choose Florida State?
Chania: I chose FSU because they were family oriented, took in my whole family from day one, they took me in for more than just me as a player but as a person and a student and they really valued what it means to be great all around. They are the top school for my major and it's a great fit for my versatile style of play as coach Sue would say !
Chania: I want to get stronger. Being able to battle against stronger competition is a must for me.
695: Which AAU teams have you played for?
Chania: Cardinals of VA under Stan King and now the MD Lady Terps under Rob Hildreth.
695: Tell me about a funny basketball road trip...
Chania: Not that it was funny, but I recall a time we were coming back from a tournament and it was HOT as anything… our bus broke down next to a cornfield and it was starting to get dark so everyone started talking about the children of the corn movie… I was so glad to finally get picked up and get home!
695: What position are you most comfortable playing?
Chania: My favorite position is shooting guard, but after this weekend, I gained more confidence at the point position. I’m not afraid to battle down low either, so wherever I’m needed.
695: What type of music do you have on your iPod?
Chania: I listen to ALL types… mainly rap and gospel.
695: Who is your favorite player?
Chania: Ooooh that’s tough… There are so many great players in the circuit. I love College basketball more, so I would choose, Odyssey Sims and Skylar Diggins. Skylar for the offensive end and Odyssey Sims for her defense.
695: What do you love most about playing this game?
Chania: I love the competition and of course winning. I enjoy getting focused and getting my teammates hyped during the game on the court and on the bench. Playing against the best of the best!
695: What are your goals for this summer?
Chania: My goal is to maintain my defensive pressure and get stronger. I want to show everyone that I too can represent the DMV with class and execution. I just love the game! And to continue to work on my game.
695: Thanks for your time and good luck.
Chania: Thank you.
