695HOOPS WHERE IT'S ALWAYS ALL ABOUT THE GIRLS
Roland Park's 2015 power forward Michala Clay recently committed to Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia. Clay is a smooth six footer with a nice offensive arsenal. We caught up to her at the Beast of the East for a quick interview.
695: How old were you when you started playing?
Michala: I first started playing basketball around the age of 9. I told my dad I wanted to try it after having seen it on tv, so he found me a rec team to start off with.
695: Have you played any other sports?
Michala: Yes, volleyball.
695: Where did you grow up?
Michala: Baltimore city.
695: Which AAU teams have you played for?
Michala: I've played for the Baltimore Cougars, Lady Lions, MD Shooting Stars, MD Elite and MD Pride.
695: What other hobbies do you have besides basketball?
Michala: I like to draw, paint, watch cartoons and just hang around.
695: What artists do you listen to before a game?
Michala: B.O.B, TI, Jay-Z or anything uptempo and some old school like "Poison" by Bell Biv Devoe.
695: Who is your favorite player?
Michala: Maya Moore and Kobe Bryant.
695: Talk about your recruiting experience and how you choose Saint Joseph's...
Michala: The recruiting process was fun. I loved the attention, but it was also very overwhelming. It was cool having different schools calling, texting, and emailing me on a daily basis. My favorite parts of the process were the college visits and getting offers. The college visits allowed me to see if that school was the place for me. I chose SJU because everything just felt right. I always got a great feel from the campus, players, environment, and coaches. I had decided to make my decision early because I didn’t want such a great opportunity such as SJU slip away.
695: What do you want to add to your game for the next level?
Michala: I want to add a 3 point shot, attack the basket off the dribble more and just be more consistent.
695: What are your goals for this high school season?
Michala: My goal is to win the IAAM A conference championship and be recognized as a prominent player and leader for Roland Park.
695: What position are you most comfortable playing?
Michala: I'm comfortable at the four but I like playing the three when given the chance.
695: Tell me about a funny basketball road trip...
Michala: Last year during the high school season, we traveled on the mini bus to go play a team in Richmond. On our way there, the bus broke down because it caught a flat tire. We were in the middle of nowhere with no sign of civilization anywhere except for a nearby 7-11 and it was cold out. So we all started to panic, wondering if we should call our parents to come pick us up or not. Meanwhile, Coach had already called for repairman to come bring us a tire. When the man came, we were told to get off the bus and since it was cold out we started walking to the 7-11. But of course as soon as we were halfway there, the tire was fixed and we had to come back. Then we got on the bus and continued onward to the game, which we were a little late for, but it definitely an afternoon to remember.
695: Thanks for your time and good luck this season.
Michala: Thanks!!!
