695HOOPS WHERE IT'S ALWAYS ALL ABOUT THE GIRLS
Shakara Head went to work at UMBC last March during Joppatowne's run to the 1A state title. She gave the Mariners a physical presence that helped propel them through the playoffs and has them thinking repeat. I chatted with the 5'10" power forward about that and some other stuff.
695: How old were you when you started playing?
Shak: I first started playing when I was 9 years old.
695: Where did you grow up?
Shak: I grew up in Edgewood, MD.
695: What teams have you played for?
Shak: I've played for the Edgewood Lady Rams and most recently I played for MD Elite.
695: Tell me about making a run for that state championship with Joppatowne last year...
Shak: It was so exciting, and it felt great for all my hard work to finally pay off. I was so proud of my team and myself. Some people never get to win a state championship in their 4 years of high school and for me to win it as a sophomore was a wonderful feeling and experience !
695: It was fun to watch You guys were putting up like 80 a game! You were playing a real physical game and moving some bodies around at UMBC. Do you enjoy the physical part of the game?
Shak: Yes, I like being "down low", and doing the dirty work for my team.
695: What do you need to improve on in your game?
Shak: I would like to improve on every part of my game, because you can always be better.
695: How are you feeling about this season and how is the team looking so far?
Shak: I was eager to get back on the court with my team and coaches. The team is looking good we're just as hungry as we were last year.
695: What type of music is on your Ipod these days?
695: I love Trey Songz, Drake, and Beyonce. I listen to a lot of slow music and sometimes hip hop.
695: Can you dance or are you the one holding up the wall at the parties?
Shak: I never hold up the wall , I have mean drop step moves on the dance floor (laughing).
695: What is your favorite all time movie?
Shak: The Lion King.
695: What is your favorite class in school besides lunch?
Shak: I have two favorite classes English and Spanish. It isn't fair to choose between the two, y luego del almuerzo !!!! (after lunch).
695: Ha, you have jokes in two languages.
Good luck this season.
Shak: Thank You.
