695HOOPS WHERE IT'S ALWAYS ALL ABOUT THE GIRLS
Lakiah Huff caught my eye at UMBC during the state playoffs with her sharp shooting and leadership for Joppatowne High. I made a mental note to follow up during the AAU state finals and I came away even more impressed with her on court demeanor and intensity. We finally made our schedules work so we could get a quick interview done. The 5'4" combo guard recently signed with Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, New York and 695Hoops was at the signing. Roberts Wesleyan is a Division II NAIA school that plays in the American Mideast Conference. Because of her strong academic background Ms. Huff was able to secure a full scholarship.
695: What made you decide on Roberts Wesleyan?
Lakiah: I like the way the coaches and other players welcomed me when I visited the school. They all seemed very sincere and genuine like they really wanted me to come there.
695: How old were you when you first picked up a ball?
Lakiah: I was 8.
695: Tell me about your background...where did you grow up? Where do you live?
Lakiah: I grew up in New York until I was about 8. I was raisd by a single mom and my two aunts. I have two brothers and two sisters, I'm the middle child. I moved to Edgewood and lived there ever since.
695: How did you end up at Joppatowne?
Lakiah: With me moving around a couple times it landed me in what I thought was an Edgewood school district, but I later found out it was Jopppatowne district. So I was put in Joppatowne.
695: What AAU clubs have you been with?
Lakiah: The Edgewood Lady Rams, The MD Lady Comets and now the Shooting Stars.
695: Who do you try to pattern your game after? Do you have a favorite player?
Lakiah: My favorite player is Ray Allen.
695: How are things going so far this summer? What tournaments have you been to?
Lakiah: Things are going great. My team has come together real well. We have played in two Adidas showcases and the Nike Midwest Showcase in Ohio.
695: What are your goals for your senior year?
Lakiah: My goals for my senior year are to win another state title, be one of the leading scorers and make first team all county.
695: What do you plan to major in when you get to college?
Lakiah: I want to major in Sports Medicine or Physical Therapy.
695: Tell me about a crazy AAU roadtrip story...
Lakiah: Okay, when I played with the Rams we went to nationals one year and the entire team walked through a drive thru with a cardboard box. And then we changed the letters on the hotel sign.
695: Can you cook?
Lakiah: Oh yea! I love to cook.
695: What do you do besides hoop?
Lakiah: I play soccer, chill with my friends or play Playstation 3.
695: Are you a wall flower at the party? I heard the Joppatowne girls can't dance...
Lakiah: Never. Maybe before I got there but I know people can't wait to get to the party!
695: I was joking. Shakara Head told me she had some moves too.
695: Tell me something most people don't know about you...
Lakiah: Most people don't know that I'm a church girl.
695: Thanks for your time, good luck the rest of the summer.
Lakiah: Thank you.
